Instrument disinfection and -cleaning
Used medical devices can be contaminated with pathogens and thus become a source of infection for humans. The reprocessing (cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation) of medical devices is associated with great responsibility. This must comply with the requirements of the Medical Devices Act (MPDG) and the Medical Devices Operator Ordinance (MPBetreibV). Cleaning refers to the removal of most visible contamination. The disinfection process reduces the number of pathogens to such an extent that they can no longer cause infection or spread of the pathogen. During the sterilisation process, the number of viable microorganisms per unit of sterilisation material is reduced to ≤ 10-6. Medical devices that come into contact with blood, internal tissues, organs and wounds must be sterile.
